Snow Like Ashes, Review

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

Plot: Sixteen years ago, the Kingdom of Winter was defeated by Spring, and nearly all of its people were either killed or enslaved. A small number escaped, but only eight survivors remain today. Among these survivors is Meira, who was orphaned during Winter’s defeat. Raised by fellow survivor Sir, Meira has been trained as a warrior along with her best friend Mather, who is the heir to Winter’s throne. The romantic chemistry between Meira and Mather is intense, yet they both are aware that they can never be together because one of them is of royal blood and the other is not. Magic plays a central role in the storyline. Winter’s magic was stolen during their defeat, and in order to restore the kingdom, the eight survivors must locate both halves of a magical locket. Meira finds one half of the locket, and sets off a chain of events that could never have been imagined. Meira is forced to become a passive pawn in a game of political alliances, when she would much prefer to be fighting on the front lines. As secrets are revealed, Winter’s survivors are put into increasingly dangerous situations. Can Meira ultimately do what is needed to help restore Winter? This book was a great read: plenty of adventure, a little bit of romance (including a bit of a love triangldyste), lots of ties that bind families, lots of magic, and a terrific group of characters. If you are a fan of dystopian fiction (like me!) you will find plenty of those elements in this book. Snow Like Ashes is certainly set up to be the first book in a series, and I look forward to reading the next part of the story.

Would you recommend this book? Yes.
