Fabulous Films 2013: Survival

The 2013 theme for Fabulous Films is Survival. Check out the great list of movies below that fit the theme. Have you seen any of them yet?

FICTION

1. 127 Hours A mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.

2. 28 Days Later– An infirmary patient awakens from a coma to an empty room to find that a powerful virus has transformed the world around him into a seemingly desolate wasteland.

3. Alive– Faced with the brutal weather conditions in the Andes after their plane crashes, members of a rugby team struggle to survive.

4. Apollo 13–  When the Apollo 13 spacecraft was seriously during an explosion, the crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth.

5. Battle Royale– A 9th grade class is sent to a remote island where they are locked into exploding neck collars, given a random weapon, and forced to hunt and kill each other until there is only one survivor left.

6. Big Miracle– Three whales are trapped by ice in the waters off Barrow, Alaska.  Various segments of the population come together to save the whales.

7. Cast Away– When Chuck Nolan’s plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean, he finds himself stranded on a deserted island.  With few supplies, Chuck must physically and mentally adapt to his new environment in order to survive.

8. Defiance– Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe escape into the Belarussian forests, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and about 1,000 Jewish non-combatants.

9. Devil’s Arithmetic– A teen girl learns to appreciate her Jewish heritage after being transported back in time to the concentration camp that imprisoned her ancestor.

10. Eight Below– This film tells the story of a pack of sled dogs abandoned at a research film.  These dogs must battle hunger, the extreme climate, and dangerous predator in order to survive.

11. Grave of the Fireflies–  Forced to fend for themselves in the aftermath of fire-bombing at the end of WWII, Seita and Setsuko’s doomed struggle is both a tribute to the human spirit and the stuff of nightmares.

12. Hunger Games– Katniss Everdeen, 16, volunteers in her younger sister’s place during the annual Hunger Games and must rely upon her sharp instincts when she’s pitted against highly trained Tributes who have prepared their entire lives.

13. I am Legend– Years after a plague kills most of humanity and transforms the rest into monsters, the sole survivor in New York City struggles valiantly to find a cure.

14. Jurassic Park– When scientists discover how to breed dinosaurs from preserved DNA and open a theme park, things go terribly wrong.

15. King of Thorn– As the Medousa Virus spreads worldwide, a handful of individuals are selected to be cryogenically frozen while a cure is developed. When they awaken they find the facility mysteriously different and must fight a battle to escape a labyrinthine nightmare.

16. Rabbit-Proof Fence–  In 1931, three aboriginal girls escape after being plucked from their homes to be trained as domestic staff and set off on a trek across the Outback.

17. Shaun of the Dead– Brain-hungry zombies shamble through the streets of London, but Shaun only cares about his girlfriend Liz, who just dumped him. With the help of his slacker roommate Ed, Shaun fights his way across town to rescue Liz.

18. Soul Surfer– After surviving a shark attack that leaves her with only one arm, Bethany Hamilton makes a comeback as a competitive surfer.

19. Tomorrow When the War Began– A group of teenagers return from a camping trip to discover their country has been taken over by an invading army and must band together to survive.

20. Wall-E– Wall-E is the last robot of the “Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class” left on earth to clean up the environmental degradation done by the former human inhabitants. When a new robot, EVE, finds plant life on Earth, Wall-E must help the human race return to their former life on Earth.

21. War of the Worlds– Ray Ferrier, a divorced father who witnesses one giant craft destroy his New Jersey town, is on the road with his teen son  and preteen daughter in tow, trying to keep ahead of the invasion.

22. Winter’s Bone– An unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact.

23. Zombieland– A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the Last Twinkie and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America.

NON-FICTION

1. American Experience-The Donner Party– This documentary by Ric Burns uncovers the tragic story of the Donner Party as they traveled across the West to settle in California.

2. Which Way Home– Among the thousands who ride the Mexican freight trains, many are children traveling alone to risk everything for the chance of a better life.
